Richard Hamer (BGS staff ?-?)

The following details were sent to me by Hugh Stevens, who is George Edwin Pattenden's Great Great Grandson.

Richard Hamer was born on 22 March 1846 at Beguildy, Radnor, the son of Thomas Hamer, farmer. He appears as the 4th master of BGS in the census of 2 April 1871. He married Clara Louisa Pattenden at Boston on 9 April 1874. Thereafter he was a Curate at Yiewsley, Middlesex, (1875); at Silk Willoughby, Lincolnshire (1876); Knipton, Leicestershire (1876-1881); and then Vicar of Granby, Nottinghamshire (1881-after 1891). After the death of his wife at Orlestone, Kent, on 19 October 1903, Richard remarried Anna. He died on 29 April 1922. His address at death was Lonsdale, Craneswater Park, Southsea, Hants, where he had been living since at least 1919. He was survived by two daughters and three sons, one of whom married Jean Rhys, the novelist.
