The Old Bostonian Association

The Annual Dinner 2000

Reg Adcock - Toastmaster

The toastmaster for this year's Annual Dinner was Reg Adcock.

The toast list was as follows:

  • Our Fallen Schoolfellows
    • by John Porcher, President
  • Grace
    • by Rev. Dick Westland
  • "THE QUEEN"
    • by John Porcher, President
  • "BOSTON GRAMMAR SCHOOL"
    • by Barry Spikings
  • Response
    • by John Neal, Headmaster

This year's dinner was special, not only being held the last of the millennium (or the first, depending on your view), but also marking the one hundredth anniversary of the Association. To mark this occasion, one of the school's best known old boys, was invited to propose the toast to the school, and a fittingly sumptuous banquet was provided. It was very nice to see attendance in the 80's, an increase of about 30 on last year.

After John's heartfelt plea at the 1999 dinner for support in maintaining the role of grammar schools, this year's message was a little more hopeful. Despite the fact that the ballot held in Ripon resulted in the continued existence of that grammar school, there is still no room for complacency. However , the school is applying for Technical College status. If successful, this will not affect its position as a grammar school, but will be advantageous whether or not it continues to be one, not least in securing special funding for information technology resources.
