Schuhplattlergruppe in German Bus Crash

The following article, dated 31 July 2001, was taken from the ITN Web site

Nine British schoolchildren have been injured in a coach crash in Germany.

The children, from Boston in Lincolnshire, were returning from a holiday in Austria.

Their bus crashed down an embankment in the town of Bad Windsheim in the southern region of Mittelfranken late last night.

In all there were 32 people on board the coach, which is reported to have been extremely badly damaged.

Nine children suffered cuts and bruises, while the 36-year-old tour leader, also from Boston, suffered a broken ankle and concussion.

The man, who has not been named, is being kept in hospital in Bad Windsheim for a couple of days. All the children were released.

The group stayed overnight in hotels and hostels in the town and were looking for a way to return to England today, police said.

A spokesperson said the bus was extremely badly damaged in the crash and the party would have to find other transport.

I understand from Ron Abbott, who was in the bus, that the person with the broken ankle was not a teacher, but the co-driver, who was in the courier seat of the bus. Apart from the co-driver, injuries were limited to cuts and bruises. Richard Anderson, the leader of the Schuhplattlergruppe, was also present. The group returned by air on 1 August 2001.

The following photographs, supplied by Ron Abbott, were in the Bad Windsheim local newspaper.
