Short Stories - The Old Bostonian (6/2003)

Richard Stanwell honoured. Rather belatedly it has come to the attention of The Old Bostonian that Richard Stanwell (BGS 1951-1959) received an MBE in the Queen’s 2002 Birthday Honours. Richard, a Committee Services Administrator of St Albans, Hertfordshire received the honour for services to the Regulation of Nurses, Midwives and Health Visitors. Richard, the brother of Robert whose article appeared in the last issue, adds his MBE to the Parry Gold Medal he won at BGS in 1959.

Simon “mobilises” Boston Town FC. Boston Town FC have their own website but now the Poachers have become one of only a handful of non-league teams in the UK to boast their own WAP site. WAP - Wireless Application Protocol - is the fast-growing mobile Internet. 'One Team In Boston' can be accessed from any WAP-enabled mobile phone as well as palmtops, PDAs and two-way pagers. Both the website and the new WAP site are run by fan Simon Ashberry who was born in Boston and went to Boston Grammar School. "The Internet is a fantastic tool but it's not always convenient for people to get to a computer to be able to log on and find the information they want," he said. "But much of that information is now accessible on your phone. I'm proud the Poachers are leading the way in this field and creating some positive publicity for football in the town for a change." The WAP site has latest results and scorers, news, forthcoming fixtures as well as latest information. The address for One Team In Boston on your WAP phone is http://buzzed.co.uk/wap/bostontownfc. Alternatively, you can also find it by looking in the non-league section of the Orange WAP directory.

Students hit a winning note. There was success for BGS students at the finals of the Rotary Club’s Young Musician of the Year 2003. Sponsored by Boston Rotary Club, the students showcased their talents at the Melton Mowbray Theatre.
In the Instrumental duet section of the senior group the title went to Mark Ferguson on piano and Matthew Grist on tenor saxophone. They gave a rendition of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by Jerome Kern and Fly Me to the Moon by Bart Howard.
BGS students also won the trophy for best overall duet.
